CBD for Crohn’s Disease [Why it Works]

How CBD can Help Treat Crohn’s Disease

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical found in cannabis, and although it comes from the same plant as THC, it doesn’t contain any psychoactive effects, meaning it won’t get you “stoned.” CBD also has very mild side effects in comparison to almost all other medications, and it poses no risk of addiction. Thus, it is a great option for patients looking for pain relief – especially those who want to avoid opioids and their adverse effects.

Pharmaceutical medications can help in treating the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, but side effects (such as those mentioned above) can often do more harm than good. As research into cannabis intensifies, scientists are discovering how cannabinoids may be a much less risky way to treat Crohn’s disease.

CBD is a cannabinoid that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant. Our body consists of a number of cannabinoids that interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors which can be found in the intestines, brain, colon, and central nervous system. CBD acts a cannabinoid which binds itself to these special receptors in our body when we consume it. When this happens, the active CBD gives the receptors the ability to relieve nausea, pain and ill feelings. In essence, CBD helps to limit the pain and swelling associated with Crohn’s disease which ultimately makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight, eat, and live a comfortable life.

There was a great article published on GreenRushDaily which explains CBD and Crohn’s Disease in a very easy to understand way. The following was stated: “When CBD links up with your body’s cannabinoid receptors, it helps regulate pain and discomfort while helping to decrease inflammation and improve appetite. All of this combines to give Crohn’s patients an effective and safe form of treatment.”

The good news is that the body is already known to contain cannabinoid receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and immune cells in great quantities, and this provides significant benefits in terms of pain and inflammation reduction.

One of the most prevalent reasons that Crohn’s patients choose to use CBD, in fact, is because it contains amazing anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. It was found that CBD has the potential to stimulate the use of additional white blood cells which, in addition to helping fight against inflammation, helps to fight off illness and disease. Of course, this is ideal for Crohn’s patients.

Furthermore, a study published by the National Institute of Health discovered that CBD contains anti-bacterial effects, which is particularly beneficial to Crohn’s patients because gastrointestinal infections are common among people who suffer from chronic GI conditions.

Typically, if you are experiencing inflammation or pain that is chronic or long-lasting, your endocannabinoid system (ECS) is out of sync. The ECS resides in the brain and helps to regulate all internal systems of the body, including the gut. Simply put, the ECS is responsible for telling the body how much acid to have in the blood, what temperature to be, and even — you guessed it — how much pain to feel.

It’s also closely associated with your immune system, which makes CBD a great compound for treating autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. Moreover, cannabis can help the body “figure out” how to work properly without giving negative side effects. In other words, CBD provides help from chemicals outside the brain, and also helps to pump up and revamp chemicals that are already in the brain that may need a “pick me up.”

By using CBD to treat Crohn’s disease, you are attacking the disease in all of the places that it is attacking the body – CBD reduces pain, protects the stomach, and decreases inflammation. Essentially, it’s an all-in-one medication that has a short (and even non-existent) list of side-effects.

50% of millennials would pick CBD oil over prescriptions for mental health

Eos Scientific has commissioned research across a sample of more than 2000 UK adults exploring the growing shift in health-conscious millennials seeking CBD oil over prescriptions for mental health

The proportion of NHS A&E patients seen within four hours has fallen dramatically, leaving many people in need of immediate care waiting for longer periods to be seen.

When it comes to mental health, the NHS is providing additional funding to better service the rising number of people seeking support in this area.

However, does it do enough to challenge the fears surrounding the strength of prescription medicines and their side-effects?

What do you know about the therapeutic benefits of Cannabis oil?

iStock-Yana-Tatevosian-696x392.jpg

Does cannabis oil affect gut inflammation? Can it be used to treat autism spectrum disorder? Discover more as we explore the dynamic world of medical cannabis.

Cannabis oil – which, when produced for medical purposes, contains carefully controlled amounts of the cannabinoids cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – continues to be the subject of much debate. In 2018, medical cannabis became legal in the UK after a nationwide outpouring of support for two young boys who rely on cannabis oil to treat their severe and rare forms of epilepsy, but lingering concerns around the safety and efficiency of the medicine mean that access is still heavily restricted.

Here, Health Europa highlights two recent pieces of research which are adding to the evidence base on the therapeutic benefits of cannabis oil.

Does cannabis oil affect gut inflammation?

Cannabis oil significantly improves both the symptoms of Crohn’s disease and patients’ quality of life, but, contrary to previous medical thinking, does not affect inflammation in the gut.

This is according to a first-of-its-kind, randomised controlled study by researchers in Israel, who enrolled 46 people with moderately severe Crohn’s disease – a type of inflammatory bowel disease – and treated them with either a placebo or cannabis oil containing 15% CBD and 4% THC.1

The researchers measured participants’ symptom severity and quality of life before, during and after treatment using validated research instruments, and assessed inflammation in the gut endoscopically and by measuring inflammatory markers in blood and stool samples.

“Cannabis has been used for centuries to treat a wide range of medical conditions, and studies have shown that many people with Crohn’s disease use cannabis regularly to relieve their symptoms,” explains lead researcher Dr Timna Naftali, a gastroenterology specialist at Meir Hospital and Kupat Holim Clinic.

“It has always been thought that this improvement was related to a reduction in inflammation in the gut, and the aim of this study was to investigate this.”

Results of the treatment

The results were surprising: after eight weeks of treatment, the group receiving cannabis oil had seen a significant improvement in their quality of life and a substantial reduction in their symptoms compared to the placebo group. 65% of the former met strict criteria for clinical remission, compared to just 35% of the latter.

However, these improvements did not seem to be caused by a suppression of the underlying inflammatory process.

“We have previously demonstrated that cannabis can produce measurable improvements in Crohn’s disease symptoms, but, to our surprise, we saw no statistically significant improvements in endoscopic scores or in the inflammatory markers we measured in the cannabis oil group compared with the placebo group,” explains Naftali.

“We know that cannabinoids can have profound anti-inflammatory effects, but this study indicates that the improvement in symptoms may not be related to these anti-inflammatory properties.”

Researchers from Dent Neurologic Institute claim that medical marijuana eases pain, anxiety and sleep disorders in elderly people

Medical marijuana eases pain, anxiety and sleep disorders in elderly people with neurological conditions, according to new research.

After just four months it helps those caused by chronic disorders including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosismotor neurone disease and spinal cord or nerve damage.

About seven in ten (69%) reported some improvement after taking cannabis for four months.

As well as being safe and effective, it also caused a third of patients to reduce their use of powerful opioids that can lead to addiction.

CBD can help your wonderful pets be pain-free. Written by Lorraine Meredith

poe

Poe my Labrador was really struggling this week. He has arthritis in his left hip and was finding it difficult to walk. I knew he was in pain and I increased his painkillers, it didn’t help. So after lots of research, I ordered him some CBD oil, I figured I had nothing to lose.

Within 24 hours he is like a different dog, no limping, jumping on the sofa and being his normal mischievous self. The difference is incredible, I am so happy that I put him on the CBD oil and hopefully, he will now be pain-free.

  • Medical cannabis was made legal on the NHS  following NHS reforms last year
  • Billy Caldwell and his mother returned from three months in ‘exile’ in Canada
  • They left the UK as they couldn’t find a doctor to prescribe medicinal cannabis
  • But yesterday they picked up cannabis from pharmacy after doctor prescribed it

A 13-year-old epileptic boy whose case led to the legalisation of medical cannabis in Britain has been given his first legal dose the country.

Billy Caldwell and his mother, Charlotte, from Castlederg, Co Tyrone, returned from three months in ‘exile’ in Canada yesterday.

They were forced to leave Britain in November because they were unable to find a doctor willing to prescribe medical cannabis  – despite it now being legal.

The pair landed at Heathrow Airport and pick up the cannabis from a pharmacy in Surrey after being prescribed it by a doctor who was told by the Department of Health it was okay to write a prescription for the medicine.

Since taking the medicine, Billy who suffers from severe epilepsy, has been almost fit-free.

Man, 29, with terminal brain tumour denied cannabis prescription that family claims is ‘his only hope’ in race to save him

George Gannon

download

When George Gannon became aware of a spate of dog poisonings where he was living in Thailand, he couldn’t stand by and do nothing. The animal loving Briton and his Canadian girlfriend Natalie Hobbs gave the strays a home, by setting up a small make shift rescue centre in their yard with seven dogs. He also managed to re-home several puppies. It was likely because of his ‘big-hearted’ nature that friends and family – and i readers – dug deep and raised £25,000 for the popular entrepreneur when he was stranded in the Asian country after waking up unable to walk or talk last September.

Diagnosed with a brain tumor aged just 29, Thai doctors made him stable, but they couldn’t provide the treatment he needed so his family made a desperate plea for help as George had no medical insurance. A month later he was flown home, but after a second surgery to remove more of his tumour and 10 rounds of radiotherapy, medics have told his devastated loved ones that there is nothing more they can do. George was set to have pioneering immunotherapy – a treatment that boosts the body’s natural defences to fight cancer – but he had just one session in December when he began to deteriorate. His family were told his growths had doubled in size.

How to Choose a CBD Oil

MAXX4 LOGO  You’ve heard of CBD oil, you keep hearing about the amazing results people are getting from it and you’d like to give it a try. But how do you choose which oil to buy? Do you want THC? No THC? Are they all as effective as each other? Here are the different factors you need to look for, broken down and explained so that you can make sure you get an oil that is going to give you results.

THC or no THC?

There is a lot of fear and confusion around THC. Some people believe that any THC is bad and therefore should be avoided, others think it is the holy grail and take it in isolation and in high quantities. The truth is, it’s all in the balance. THC and CBD have a relationship that works best when they are used together. THC and CBD both fit perfectly into the endocannabinoid system in the brain but have different positive qualities.

  • CBD has been shown to help regulate your immune system, reduce inflammation and has been shown to help with an endless list of health issues such as depression and anxiety, digestive issues, epilepsy, cancer and many more.
  • THC has been shown to have amazing painkilling properties, protect brain cells and even encourage brain growth, reduce nausea and help people to sleep better, amongst other things.

However, as you might expect, nature knows best and when you start to isolate these elements it causes problems. THC used in isolation and in high doses, such as in recreational cannabis, can cause stress, anxiety and memory loss and causes a psychoactive high that is addictive. CBD is harmless when isolated but seems to be much less effective than when used in conjunction with the right amount of THC.

CBD calms the system down and blocks the ‘high’ you would otherwise get if using THC in isolation. CBD and THC, in the right quantities, enhance the positive effects of each other giving you much more powerful results.

Simply put – a high dose (up to the legal limit) of THC combined with the same or more CBD creates a more powerful positive effect with no side effects and won’t get you high or cause addiction.

mikhail-pavstyuk-8436-unsplash  The Law

So, the mystery of THC is solved but you are still unsure as to which levels and forms are legal and which are likely to give you a criminal record.

There are three forms of cannabis: medicinal, recreational and industrial.

Medicinal is produced from the marijuana plant and contains 50% THC and 50% CBD. It is legal in some countries but needs careful monitoring, due to the high strength, and therefore is only available on prescription.

Recreational is also from the marijuana plant but has often been modified to increase the THC levels and barely has any CBD in at all, which is why you get a high from it but very little benefits. It also has harmful, negative side effects. It is illegal in most European countries.

Industrial (including CBD oil) is produced from the hemp plant and is naturally low in THC and high in CBD. The legal limit for THC levels in most of Europe is 0.2% and a licence is required to produce the oil.

Simply put – go for a CBD oil made from industrial hemp and check that it is licensed and has no more than 0.2% THC (applicable to most countries in Europe)

jose-luis-sanchez-pereyra-1256038-unsplash  Whole Plant, Extraction Method and Purity

As we looked at earlier, nature’s medicine works best when used as nature intended. Some CBD oils are produced using only the seeds or stems of the hemp plant, but this means you are missing out on many other components including getting the maximum amount of terpenes. Terpenes are important as they work synergistically with the cannabinoids and influence their effect in the brain.

There are several different ways of extracting the CBD oil from the plant. Some methods use ethanol or even gasoline which then leaves traces of these toxins in the oil. CO2 extraction method is completely clean, using only harmless CO2 gas, which disperses leaving the oil completely pure. This purity can then be tested in a laboratory to make sure there is no contamination. Of course, you need to the oil to be grown and produced organically to be free of pesticides, too. Nobody wants toxic pesticides in their health product.

Simply put – look for organic, ‘whole plant’ CBD oil that is CO2 extracted and has been tested by a third-party lab.

oil 1  Which Carrier Oil?

Once the CBD has been extracted from the plant it is mixed with a carrier oil. The oil dilutes the CBD to the correct strength, makes measuring dosages easier and sometimes helps with absorption into the body. Some of the carrier oils most often used are sunflower, olive, hemp seed and MCT from palm/coconut.

Sunflower oil contains lecithin which not only helps with the absorption of CBD at a cellular level but has its own benefits too. Sunflower lecithin may help improve memory, strengthen the immune system and could even help prevent strokes and heart attacks.

Olive oil has larger fat molecules which makes it harder for your body to process and so less CBD is absorbed.

Hemp Seed oil may seem like a logical choice but, actually, is not very bioavailable to the body so is not great for absorption.

MCT Palm/coconut oil MCT (Medium Chain Triglycerides) are smaller fat molecules that are easily absorbed into the body but have been isolated from coconut oil or palm oil and therefore it is a mechanically altered substance and is not in its natural state. Due to this MCT can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Also, many people choose to avoid palm oil products due to the deforestation it causes.

Simply put – choose a natural, organic carrier oil with as many health benefits as possible, no side effects and that is easily and effectively absorbed into the body and cells.

Hopefully, this information has helped dispel some of the myths and mysteries surrounding CBD oil and you now feel confident in choosing the best oil for you
