4 WEEKS OF HELL: Royal Blackburn Hospital doctors diagnose woman with cancer – only to find it was inflamed appendix moments before surgery

A GRANDMOTHER said ‘goodbye’ to her family after being told she needed a cancer operation – only for doctors at Royal Blackburn Hospital to discover she had been misdiagnosed moments before surgery.

Sandra Lord was left heartbroken last month when a pain in her stomach was diagnosed as bowel cancer following a scan at the hospital on April 16. The 69-year-old was due to have part of her bowel removed when she went under the knife at the hospital on Tuesday. But when the surgery team performed a colonoscopy before the operation they discovered that what they thought was a lump on the bowel was actually caused by an inflamed appendix rubbing against the bowel. Having been told she was due to stay in for seven to 10 days, Mrs Lord, from Waterfoot, woke up from the operation just two hours after she was given an epidural and was told it had all been a big mistake.

She said: “It’s obviously a relief that I haven’t got cancer but I shouldn’t have had to go through that. It’s been a living hell for a month.

£10m payout to Harrogate boy left disabled at birth

A young boy from Harrogate has been awarded almost £10m in a payout from the NHS after medical errors at his birth left him severely disabled.

Medical staff failed to spot that Kit vanBerckel, who was born 10 days overdue, was suffering distress before his birth in 2008.  Medical staff failed to spot that Kit van Berckel, who was born 10 days overdue, was suffering distress before his birth in 2008. The High Court heard that staff had failed to correctly interpret and act on a pathological CTG pre-birth heart scan. As a result of this Kit, who is now six years old, was born at Harrogate District Hospital, without a heartbeat and needed resuscitating. Soon after his birth he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which means he can’t sit without help, can’t move on his own, is unable to feed himself and can’t speak.

The £9.872 million payment awarded to the family will provide lifelong care and rehabilitation for Kit. The youngster, who is a pupil at Richard Taylor School in Harrogate, needs to use eye gaze technology and other hi-tech systems to communicate with his classmates.

Shocking NHS op blunders that should NEVER happen revealed by Daily Mirror

A patient died after being given the wrong type of blood and another had a testicle removed unnecessarily – just two of the shocking NHS blunders uncovered by the Daily Mirror.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said six mistakes like these are happening in hospitals every week. They are called “never events” – because they are so bad they should never happen. And our probe under the Freedom of Information Act exposes some of the shocking details for the first time. In one case a patient was told they had cancer and had part of their nose chopped off by mistake, while a second was wrongly told they didn’t have cancer.

Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, said: “As suggested by the name, these sorts of events are utterly unacceptable and pose a huge risk to patient safety and well-being. “While we accept accidents will sometimes occur, it is vital that lessons are learnt each time to ensure they aren’t repeated. “This is yet another reminder of the need to properly fund the regulation of healthcare to ensure that it detects patterns of errors such as these, and acts to ensure that no more patients are put at risk.”

Roger Goss, director of Patient Concern, said: “If the concept is to achieve a reduction in harm to patients, staff responsible for these never events should be fired. That is what would happen in the private sector. Unfortunately, getting rid of anyone from the NHS, however careless or incompetent, is virtually impossible.”

WRONG NOSE: WRONG BLOOD: WRONG BIOPSY:

WRONG TESTICLE:

UK’s worst doctors are named, shamed but let off: Just a slap on the wrist… for fatal mistakes and criminal behaviour

Some of Britain’s worst doctors have been allowed to carry on practising despite making fatal medical errors and engaging in criminal behaviour, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.
In spite of such failings as overlooking cancer symptoms, botching operations and kerb-crawling, they have been effectively let off with a slap on the wrist.
In total, 147 doctors were given formal warnings by the General Medical Council (GMC) in 2013, which is charged with upholding professional standards. Cases included:
At least five in which doctors missed the symptoms of cancer – sometimes with fatal consequences;
A surgeon who threw a scalpel across an operating theatre during an operation;
A GP who indecently exposed himself at a Christmas party; and another caught soliciting for prostitutes.
In each case, the GMC chose to issue a warning rather than impose a tougher penalty. Last year, 55 other doctors were struck off – 1.6 per cent of the 3,348 formally investigated.
A further 86 were suspended, out of the total of 233,000 doctors who are licensed to practise
