STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Strength in Numbers dedicated to my late mother Kay

On the 9th anniversary of my mother’s passing… By Joanna Slater

On the anniversary of my darling mother Kay’s passing 9 years ago today on the 8th January 2008

Not a day goes past without my mother in my thoughts. It’s been a long journey but I hope that by bringing awareness to others through my book, blog and Strength in Numbers group page her name will live on forever and hopefully can make a difference and bring an awareness to all those who have suffered.

‘Humanitarian crisis’ in NHS hospitals, warns Red Cross

There is a “humanitarian crisis” in NHS hospitals in England, the British Red Cross has said

The charity said volunteers and staff had been helping patients get home from hospital and called for more government money to stabilise the situation.

It comes as a third of hospital trusts in England warned they needed action to cope with patient numbers last month. NHS England said plans were in place to deal with winter pressure and beds were not as full as this time last year.

Figures show that 42 A&E departments ordered ambulances to divert to other hospitals last week – double the number during the same period in 2015.

750 avoidable deaths a month in NHS hospitals, study finds

“THIS IS WHY YOU NEED MYNOTES MEDICAL”

One in 28 deaths can be attributed to poor care and study says standard death rates should not be used to rank quality of care

About 750 patients a month in NHS hospitals are dying unnecessarily, the largest review of “avoidable deaths” has found. Researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said “One in 28 deaths could be attributed to poor care such as inattentive monitoring of the patient’s condition, doctors making the wrong diagnosis or patients being prescribed the wrong medicine”.

In February, the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, announced that hospitals in England would be required to monitor the rate of avoidable deaths and that officials would rank trusts on this measure. Hunt said the rate of avoidable deaths in hospitals was the “biggest scandal in global healthcare” and estimated that 1,000 patients died needlessly each month. He said healthcare should learn lessons from the airline industry, where annual deaths worldwide had fallen from 2,000 in the 1970s to 500 now.

NHS staff being trained to spot ebola signs in patients, says CMO – By Nicola Merrifield – Nursing Times

Preparations are underway to ensure all frontline staff in local NHS hospitals across England are trained in how to deal with suspected cases of ebola, should someone “walk in off the street” showing symptoms. Speaking during a parliamentary health committee session on the virus, chief medical officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said NHS England was training clinicians and other staff on how to use personal protective equipment, and the procedures around dealing with suspected cases. She added that every accident and emergency department was working to develop an isolation room on site where someone with suspected ebola could be placed before a diagnosis was made.

CQC report: More than half of NHS hospitals ‘require improvement’ and at least five are ‘inadequate’

Patient safety is being put at risk by an “unacceptable” postcode lottery in the quality of NHS care, the hospital watchdog has warned in its annual report. The Care Quality Commission said that while its inspectors had found frontline staff to be caring almost across the board, too many hospitals were poorly led and failing to adequately keep patients safe. Their findings are based on a year of new-style inspections in which half of England’s NHS hospitals, as well as a number of GP surgeries and care homes, have been rated.

Fears that hospitals are covering up death rates

Hospitals have been accused of “fiddling” their death rate figures by claiming patients were terminally ill, after new figures showing dramatic changes in the way mortality is recorded. The NHS data shows a five-fold rise in the proportion of deaths being “coded” so that they barely count towards hospital mortality statistics – with some trusts now recording one in three deaths as a “palliative” case. Last night experts said they were troubled by the “deeply concerning” trends, fearing hospitals could be hiding the fact patients had suffered poor care which contributed to their death. They said the scale of the misreporting was such that it could even hide “another Mid Staffs” scandal. Every NHS hospital has to collect and publish data showing how its death rates compare with what would be expected.
